Rape Hurts Foundation – For support of Treatment, Prevention, Care and Education

Objectives

Security & Protection

To secure a property with a full-time counselor living on the premises, where rape victims and survivors can be housed here temporarily and receive counseling with others who have suffered abuse and are able to relate to one another, until such time as they are able to rejoin society and make a positive contribution.

Economic Empowerment & Micro-credit

To train the rape victims and survivors incoming generating activities, such economic empowerment also lifts up their self esteem especially in the rural poor villages where we work. That financial decision is a good empowerment to especially women and girls who are sometimes depend on the mercy of their abusers and rapist. In instances of spousal abuse this breaks the cycle of victims being at the mercy of the abuser as they are unable to sustain themselves and therefore perpetuate the vicious cycle of abuse.

Water

Access to Safe Clean Water is one thing which is directly related to Rape where we work. In our communities fetching water is a primary cultural role of the women/girls, water is always fetched from very long distances and the women/girls have to walk for miles sometimes late in the dark night. These women are at risk and are always targeted by the rapists and abusers. So Access to Safe Clean Water is one way of helping women/girls not to be raped.

Farming & Food Security

Thousands of cases have been reported in Jinja and Kamuli, where always Women are forced into sex call it rape as they try to provide or fend for their families, there are millions of women/girl headed families in Eastern Uganda. So we strongly believe that if we support women to grow food crops & improve food production, the rape risk is also reduced.

HIV/AIDS Orphans & Vulnerable Children

Hundreds of Thousands of cases of Rape, ritual rape, forced marriage and child marriages are never reported, most women/girls don’t want to be assured, the unforgiving reality is that a lot of STDs/STIs – HIV/AIDS have been spread by raping the innocent women/girls. This has in the end created a generation of orphans and the cycle continues. RHF says this has to stop and as we work towards stopping this unforgiving suffering. We must provide, protect and empower the HIV/AIDS Orphans and Vulnerable Children. This is done through education sponsorship, vocational education and skills/talent development.

Trauma & Friendly Corners

To set up trauma centre rooms & friendly centers equipped with toys and constructive materials for children who have been abused.

Sexual Reproductive Health & Rights

Education & Skills are key in rape reduction and prevention. RHF has a running program on SRHR which also has topics on rape prevention and reduction in our communities.

Lobby & Advocacy

RHF believes that the Ugandan Government has a social contract with the Ugandans; it’s a direct role of the government to stop and prevent rape. So RHF is always engaging the Ugandan government, the police, politicians, law makers etc to punish, craft laws, carry out awareness programs all geared towards rape prevention and reduction.

Legal Aid

RHF makes sure that the victims of rape get the justice they need. This also sets a precedent to could be offenders. We work with lawyers who are willing to offer pro-bono services to these kinds of victims, who could otherwise not receive justice.

Media, Research & Documentation:

At RHF, which follow up every case, every report of rape and/or sexual harassment. We believe each case is special and the world should know about it. Every case should be given due attention, details documented (of course while protecting the victims) and the abusers exposed. A dedicated team of volunteers follows up each and every case or lead.

Medical and Treatment

Our clients are always poor and can’t afford a proper medical and treatment after being raped. RHF has set out to establish a Women & Children’s Hospital to target such people. In the past we have lost many children who have been raped but when there isn’t even medical and treatment support. It’s in this center where women/girls who have contracted HIV through Rape will be attended to.

ICT Preventing Rape

Using Technology Rape can be prevented. This is possible by Cellphones. We are also distributing whistles and pepper spray.
